Cloud Forest Hikes
Most guests visit either the Monteverde or Santa Elena Reserve during their stay. Those who really like to hike may visit both.
Three other reserves each provide unique environments and ecosystems, but generally have less room to roam. Guides talk to other guides and know which reserve is having great wildlife activity at any given time.
We highly recommend a twilight tour, for an unforgettable new perspective on the cloud forest.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Excursion
The trails of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve offer short, intermediate and long hikes through different types of forest. A longer trail visits the Continental Divide, and the dwarf forests of its windy, cloud swept ridgeline.View Details
Santa Elena Reserve Excursion
Its higher elevation makes this whole reserve cooler and windier, creating a dense, ever moist example of Cloud Forest. This reserve sits on the Caribbean Slope and offers short, intermediate and long hikes.View Details
Curi Cancha is a mix of fully recovered and recovering secondary forest. Several large open areas make good points to stop and look for birds. This reserve offers shorter hikes with easier access, and only allows 40 visitors at a time.View Details
Walk 10 minutes through the forest from Monteverde Lodge to the Ecological Sanctuary. This former banana plantation is now part of a biological corridor. Short hikes take their time through a biologically rich forest.View Details
Ecological Sanctuary Twilight Tour
Definitely save an evening for this. Your guide will arm you with flashlights and you’ll move from the Lodge gardens to the ecological sanctuary as the day begins to wane. Look for creatures in the dark and be back by dinner.View Details
Afterwards, cool off from your hike without ever leaving the cloud forest, in the outdoor pool set within the Lodge gardens.
