Day 1: Pick Up to Monteverde (D)
Be picked up at your hotel for the morning drive to Monteverde. Drive times will vary depending on which pick up point you’re coming from (you can find drive times at the bottom of this document). No matter what, the last piece of your drive will wind up from the lowlands and into the Tillaran Mountain range, with views along the way. Arrive at Monteverde Lodge in time for lunch (on your own). Please note that checkout time is at 12:00 PM, and you may have to wait to check into your room. We’ll store your luggage so that you can start exploring or sit down to lunch right away.
After lunch, meet your Naturalist Guide and explore the Monteverde Lodge Gardens. This 15-year-old garden is home to Imperial Bromeliads, Costa Rica's national flower known locally as the Guaria Morada and hedges of Blue porter weed and Lantana where butterflies feed constantly. Emerald Toucanet, Euphonia, Whitefaced Capuchin Monkey and the Agouti are frequent visitors here. Follow the path down past the solar heated pool to find the lookout point – it’s a good place to return to come sunset.
Day 2: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (B,L,D)
Today you will have an excursion (up to 10 people) to the one of Monteverde's Cloud Forest Reserves. Your escort today is one of Monteverde Lodge's handpicked guides, the very best Naturalists in the region.
Which reserve will be visited and the time of day (morning or afternoon), will be defined the day before depending on weather, recent sightings but most importantly where your Naturalist Guide thinks you will have the best experience. Check with the front desk the night before your tour to get the final time of the tour to the Cloud Forest.
This is a good time to set up optional activities for your free time in Monteverde. Some examples include a visit to a coffee plantation, a chocolate tour, horseback riding, a bat jungle and more. These can be set up directly with the lodge once you arrive.
Day 3: Monteverde to Drop Off Point (B,L)
Breakfast at the Lodge.
Morning free to continue to explore the region or book additional activities. After lunch, say goodbye to the Lodge and transfer to your drop off point.
Pick Up and Drop Off Points
We pick up and drop off at hotels in any of the following areas, so that you can work Monteverde into the flow of your Costa Rica itinerary.
Estimated drive times are in parentheses.
San Jose (3.5-4 hours)
Manuel Antonio (4.5 hours)
Golfo Papagayo (3.5-4 hours)
Coco - Ocotal (3.5-4 hours)
Tamarindo - Conchal - Flamingo (4.5 hours)
Montezuma – Santa Teresa (6-7 hours - you’ll cross the Gulf of Nicoya via ferry)
Arenal (3-4 hours)
Transfers from every destination outside of San Jose will be conducted by a recommended shuttle company.
They operate as a shuttle – picking up and dropping off travelers at a series of different hotels. We pick the best operators available and work with them constantly (some would probably call it hassling) to impart high standards, but unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that a Costa Rica Expeditions level of service always applies. Please let us know how they do!
